Fellow Luffe 37 sailors

During our survey prior to DM (The open Danish National Championship) it become clear that several foreign Luffe 37 are frustrated that almost all material is in Danish. “We enjoy seeing the pictures, but we don’t understand the writing”, was a typical comment. Unfortunately it is not possible to translate our materiel into English due to lack of resources. However, I will encourage you to write articles in your native language – we will be happy to bring them in our magazines and on the web. To compensate a little to this issue, this Klumme will be in English. I will try to give you a brief update on what is going on in our class.

First of all, is there a strong demand for Luffe 37. This goes both for second hand Luffe 37 and for new Luffe 37. The down side is that Luffe Yacht is fully booked until 2008.

This year we initiated to do more for those who predominately are interested in cruising. 4 harbour and corresponding dates were pointed out. The idea was to have Luffe 37 cruising sailors to meet at these places for a nice evening at the barbeque. The success for those arrangements has been limited, but we believe the need is there, but it takes some time before this opportunity is communicated. So those events will be repeated in 2007.

DM 2006 was very well arranged by Kerteminde Sejlklub (Yacht club) in early august where 16 Danish and 2 Swedish boats participated. Morten Galskov won in DEN177. Again it became clear how similar the Luffe 37 sails. DEN 5 with Per Asmussen, one of the oldest Luffe 37, was long the best bet for a winner but ended as number 3. The local sailor, Peter Martinussen finished in great style as number 2 in his well kept Martinique build in 1986.

I was pleased to see 3 German Luffe 37 on cruising in Kerteminde during the Championship. It is very important for me to state, that every Luffe 37 is more than welcome to drop in while you’re cruising by. Your are more than welcome to place your Luffe in the pack. Your are more than welcome to come over and ask questions. You are more than welcome to come over and share your ideas.  In fact, I strongly encourage you to show up. Although it is a regatta, DM is also the place and time where we share our passion for our fine sailing ship. People tend to stay in our class. Luffe sailors don’t easily give up their Luffe 37. One side of this is the quality of the boat. But I believe there is another important aspect and that is the great spirit we have in our class. We are open. We help each other and share our thoughts. The fastes boats in the class honestly try to help the rest of the fleet. It is easy to borrow fine sails if you are short. This is a tremendous asset we have. Should you not have participated in one of our events, I urge you try this openness out. Come and join the party. Have fun. You will properly get some new friends too.

I hope everybody in the Luffe 37 class are aware that here we have something very special – and will help preserving our spirit that way. And to those of you who repeatedly lending sails to others, help with questions and make it comfortable to be in the Luffe 37 class – thanks, I hope you will continue to do so.

So whatever your are cruising or racing – why not show up at DM in Bogense 10 -12 august 2007. The Swedes have promised me to participate in the race with least 3 boats. I hope see more boats from abroad in Bogense. And a lot of Danish Luffe 37 too. In fact we are launcing a bold plan for DM 2007. We named it PLAN30, because our goal is to have 30 Luffe 37 participating in DM 2007. You will hear more about this. Also I know there is luffe 37 in the Nederland’s and in Switzerland. If you find the distance to long for moving your boat you might be interested in participating as crew. If you wish to join a crew please let me know and I will try to arrange a boat and accommodations.  I am looking forward to see you next year whether you are cruising or racing.
